Best Tiny Desk Concert

NPR put musicians behind an office desk in an open-plan newsroom with no reverb, no monitors and nowhere to hide. It has been running for over fifteen years and has become the format artists ask for.

The constraint is the whole thing. Stadium production cannot follow an act into that room, so what arrives instead is arrangement — horns replacing synths, three singers replacing a stack of vocal takes, and a rhythm section playing quietly enough for the office to keep working. Some careers have been genuinely reframed by twenty minutes at that desk. Others have been exposed by it, which is the same property working in the other direction. Eighty-two sets are in, and the thing being judged is the performance in that room rather than the artist's catalogue.

That distinction is what makes this bracket different from a general music bracket. Several enormous acts turn in an ordinary Tiny Desk, and several performers most voters have never heard of turn in something extraordinary, and the format has no way of knowing which is which.
