Cutest Animal on Earth

Cuteness is a real and reasonably well understood response — large eyes, round face, short limbs, clumsy movement — and understanding the mechanism does nothing whatsoever to reduce its effect on you.

Several entries here are actively exploiting that mechanism rather than merely possessing it. The quokka's facial structure produces what reads to humans as a permanent smile and has made it the most photographed animal in Australia by some distance. Sea otters hold hands while sleeping so that they do not drift apart on the current, a survival behaviour that the internet has thoroughly repurposed. The capybara is enormous, has none of the proportions the definition calls for, and wins anyway on temperament alone. Forty-five animals are in, and rarity, intelligence and conservation status are all explicitly not the question being asked.

This bracket produces faster decisions than almost anything else on the site. Nobody weighs it up. The choice happens somewhere below deliberation, and the rounds go past at a speed that surprises people who assumed they would have to think about it.
