Queen put out singles for twenty-four years with Freddie Mercury and kept releasing them for three decades after he died, and every one of those A-sides is in this draw. That is the reason the matchups get strange. Keep Yourself Alive and A Winter's Tale are the work of the same band, and there is almost nothing you could point to in one that would help you argue about the other.

Four people wrote here, and all four of them got hits, which is rarer than it sounds. Mercury wrote Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. May wrote We Will Rock You and Who Wants to Live Forever. Taylor wrote Radio Ga Ga. Deacon wrote Another One Bites the Dust and You're My Best Friend. Picking a favourite usually means picking which of them you were listening to without knowing it.

The band also changed instruments roughly every three years. There is no synthesiser anywhere on the first six albums, and the sleeves said so. By Hot Space the guitar has nearly gone and the drums are programmed. By The Works both are back.
