You get one item. Not a loadout, not a bag — one, and everything else on the shelf stays there.

That constraint is what makes the list interesting, because it forces a choice between categories that normally cooperate. A machete never jams, never runs out and never makes noise, which is three genuine advantages over anything mechanical. A water filter addresses the thing that actually kills people in a collapse, which is not zombies. A crowbar opens doors, which is most of the real problem. Duct tape and rope are on the list because improvisation beats specialisation once the supply chain is gone, and both are far more useful than they look next to a crossbow. Thirty-two items are in, and the fiction is a frame rather than the point — this is really a bracket about what you would want in any long emergency.

The weapons win the early rounds and the boring items win the late ones, almost without exception. That happens quickly enough to be funny and is probably the most accurate thing about the whole exercise.
