Twelve slots on a timetable, and everybody remembers precisely which ones they would have dropped given the chance. School subjects get judged twice in a life and the two verdicts rarely match. At the time, the ranking is really about the teacher, the room, and what time of day the lesson fell. Later it becomes a question of what stayed useful, and by that measure the answers reshuffle completely — people who hated mathematics frequently name it, and people who loved art usually still do. This bracket sits between those two judgements, which is why voters find it harder than the subject matter suggests.

It holds thirty-two subjects wide, including several that have quietly vanished from most timetables in the decades since.

Physical education is the entry that splits the field hardest. For one group it was the only hour of the week that felt like being alive, and for another it is the reason they still avoid changing rooms. There is almost nobody in the middle, and it produces the most lopsided individual match-ups in the bracket.
