Best Sport to Watch

Not to play. To watch — a different question entirely, and one that produces a different answer than people expect going in.

What makes a sport good on television has surprisingly little to do with how good it is to do. The requirement is a legible clock and a reason to keep looking. Soccer runs ninety minutes for a handful of goals and works because the near-misses carry all the tension.

Basketball works for exactly the opposite reason, with the lead changing so often that the final four minutes take twenty. Formula racing is mostly procession punctuated by ten seconds that decide the year. Boxing has the shortest distance between watching and understanding of anything here.

Expect thirty-two sports, competing for the last free hour of a Saturday afternoon.

The bracket tends to reward sports that survive being watched alone. Several entries are enormously better in a crowded room with people who care, and they lose ground the moment the voter pictures a sofa and a screen — which is where most sport actually gets consumed.
