Best Horror Movie Quote

A horror film gets one or two lines that escape it. The rest of the script stays where it was written; these ended up on t-shirts, in other people's mouths, and on decorations sold in supermarkets every October.

What survives is rarely the scariest thing said. It is usually the shortest, and often the one delivered as something other than a threat — a talk show introduction, a dinner recommendation, a man estimating the size of a boat. The horror arrives because the delivery refuses to.

Twenty-five lines, each paired with the scene it came from, because a quote on a page is a different object than a quote in a mouth. Reading REDRUM does nothing at all. Hearing it is the whole trick.

Some of these come from films nobody would defend, and several of the best films in the genre are missing entirely, because they never handed anyone a sentence to carry out of the theatre. That is the thing actually being judged here.
