Ultimate Animal Showdown

One bracket, no cages, and no attempt to pretend this is a serious zoological exercise. It is the oldest playground argument there is and it has never been settled.

The honest answer to most of these match-ups is that it depends on circumstances the format cannot represent — terrain, distance, whether either animal has any interest in fighting at all, and whether one of them simply decides to leave. Hippos kill more people annually than lions and tigers combined, largely by being territorial rather than predatory.

A grizzly and a polar bear differ mainly in that one of them has never encountered anything it could not eat. Elephants and rhinos are effectively unassailable by anything else here and are still not obvious winners, because size is not the same thing as willingness.

There are thirty-two animals in it, and the framing is deliberately simple: who walks away from the encounter.

Nobody is going to resolve this, and that is the appeal rather than a defect. The bracket exists to make an unresolvable argument specific enough to have properly, one pair at a time, instead of all at once.
