The last spot in the pantry, and the question is narrower than it first appears: what you would actually reach for at midnight rather than what you would put on a shopping list.

Snacks succeed on mouthfeel far more than flavour, which is why the list looks the way it does. Potato chips are engineered around a specific fracture point that produces a sound the brain reads as freshness.

Popcorn is almost nothing by weight and takes a long time to eat, which is most of its appeal. Beef jerky is the only entry that requires genuine effort to consume and rewards it. Trail mix is three good snacks and one bad one sold together, and everybody picks around the bad one.

Thirty-two snacks made the cut, from the engineered to the merely available.

The midnight framing is doing more than it looks. Apple slices and granola bars are on this list and they perform very differently under that constraint than they would under a question about what you should be eating.
