Every scenario here ends the world. The only thing on offer is which one, which is a bleak question and also a genuinely interesting one.

What separates them is not the death toll — it is what is left to work with afterwards. A pandemic leaves the infrastructure standing and removes the people who ran it. A solar flare does exactly the opposite, sparing everyone and killing the grid. Nuclear winter takes the sun away for years, and that is the one variable nothing else on the list can compensate for. Machine uprisings and alien invasions are the only entries with an opponent capable of adapting to whatever you try next, which makes them qualitatively different from the weather.

Thirty-two of them made the cut. Judge on survivability rather than spectacle: how long you last, which of your skills suddenly matter, and whether there is any version of the story where things eventually get better rather than simply stopping.

Most people find their answer moves as the rounds go on. The fast catastrophes look worse in isolation and considerably better once you have compared them against the slow ones.
