The eligibility rule here is doing more work than usual, and it is worth stating plainly before you start. Every player in this bracket won the Ballon d'Or, FIFA World Player of the Year, a World Cup Golden Ball, or a nomination to France Football's all-time Dream Team.

That rule exists because arguments about the greatest footballer usually collapse into arguments about who is allowed in the room. Drawing the line at contemporary recognition means the field is not a personal opinion — it is what the sport thought at the time, decade by decade, which is a harder thing to dispute. It also produces a field that spans from the 1950s to the present, where a voter is comparing players who never faced the same defenders, the same pitches, or the same number of games per season.

Altogether, one hundred and thirty-one players qualified, each with position, honours and era listed so the comparison is at least informed. Four players who belong here are missing photographs and therefore missing entirely, because no freely licensed image of them exists. That gap is a licensing problem rather than an editorial judgement, and it is unlikely to be fixed.
