What makes it more interesting than it sounds is how quickly the criteria drift without anyone noticing. Voters start with a straightforward reaction and, by roughly the third round, are quietly weighing a performance they liked, a character they were attached to for a season, or an interview they happened to see once. Somebody objectively better looking loses to somebody who was in a show that mattered to the voter at the right age, and almost nobody catches the substitution as it happens.

You are choosing among seventy-nine actors, drawn from film and television across several generations, with a few of the roles each is best known for listed alongside them so the comparison has some footing.

The photographs come from Wikimedia Commons, which means red carpet and press event shots rather than styled studio portraits. That flattens the field considerably against what a magazine would run, and it makes this a fairer contest than the equivalent list almost anywhere else.
