Most Satisfying Sound

Sounds only, and no music allowed. This is the small end of the auditory world — the noises that make your shoulders drop without you deciding anything.

There is a fairly consistent pattern underneath the list once you look. Most of these are either steady and broadband, which is what rain, waves and wind through trees have in common, or they are a single clean event that signals a process completing correctly. Bubble wrap, a struck match, an egg cracking, a coffee pour finishing: each one is the sound of something working. The industry that grew up around this in the last decade did not invent the effect. It just noticed it.

In practice that means thirty-two sounds, presented as photographs, which is an obvious compromise and works better than it should. There is a rough divide between the sounds people find calming and the ones they find satisfying, and they are not the same thing. Rain on a roof belongs to the first group and popping bubble wrap belongs firmly to the second, and most voters have a clear preference between the two categories.
